I've looked at the scenario that you've posed. Whether the income is split between the two or earned by one or the other, the adjusted gross income is the same and the taxable income is the same. The filing status of married filing jointly applies regardless of whom the income is earned by.
I could see differences if you and your spouse completed separate returns. The results would be different
