Get your taxes done using TurboTax

The credit for taxes paid to another state is based on the actual tax liability shown on your non-resident tax return.  The information that needs to be entered on the IT-112-R will not be found on your W2.

The amount you need to enter on line 24(a) of your IT-112-R is the total amount of tax liability calculated on your New Jersey tax return (located on line 49 on your Form NJ-1040NR.)  Since you've already prepared your New Jersey non-resident return, review the entries on that return, including the summary at the end that shows what your total New Jersey tax liability was.  For example, the end of the nonresident return will have a summary screen that shows something along the lines of New Jersey tax of $2202, with New Jersey withholding of $2212, and resulting in a refund of $9.
