Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Unfortunately there is not a way to file another extension to give more time to file your tax return. A timely filed 2024 extension gives you until October 15, 2024 to file your return to be considered timely filed.
However, although October 15 is the last day for most people to file, some taxpayers may have more time. They include:
- Members of the military and others serving in a combat zone. They typically have 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due. The IRS recognized combat zones can be found at this link: IRS Recognized Combat Zones
- Taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas who already had valid extensions. For details, see the disaster relief page on IRS.gov, located at this link: IRS Disaster Relief By State There are quite a few areas that have automatically extended the due date for various returns for individuals living in certain areas.
There is usually no penalty for failure to file if you are due a refund. Those who have yet to file a current year tax return, owe tax, and did not request an extension (or does not file the return by the extended due date) can generally avoid additional penalties and interest by filing the return as soon as possible and paying any taxes owed.
