Maybe back when I started using Turbotax (when it was still MacInTax) the physical copy was worth something.  But for at least the last 5 years or more, the version of TT on the physical CD is a barely functioning "starter" copy that still contains prior year forms and tax tables, and needs to be updated before it can be used.  Basically, the box you see in the store around Thanksgiving is a marketing ploy to lock customers in to Turbotax before they go to another product.  It takes a major update, usually around January 7, before the program can actually prepare a functioning tax return.
