Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Yes, if you claimed your child as a dependent and later that child files a return saying they aren't a dependent, it'll be rejected because they were already claimed as dependent on another return.

If you agree that your child isn't your dependent, you can amend your return and take them off as a dependent, but that won't resolve the child's rejected return.

They aren't going to be able to e-file this year unless they indicate they are a dependent, even if you amend your return.

Your child can indicate that they are a dependent, e-file the return and then amend it later, or they can file without showing they are a dependent by printing, signing, and mailing in the return.

Here's how to file an amended return in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend.
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Carefully follow the directions to start your amendment.
  5. Your refund will go to zero, don't worry, that's normal.
  6. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending, and Continue.
  7. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the My Info.
  8. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.
