Get your taxes done using TurboTax
You can actually electronically file your Maryland return and claim the credit. A PDF of your required certification from the Maryland Higher Education Commission will need to be uploaded to TurboTax, as described below.
To get the relevant section in TurboTax Online:
- Select Tax Home in the left pane
- On the Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, select the dropdown on the right side of the State Taxes box, then select Start, Continue, Pick up where you left off, or Review/Edit
- If you land on a Maryland interview page, select Let's get started, Continue or other similar prompt. Otherwise, in the left pane, select Prepare State, then proceed through the Maryland screens
- Proceed through the state screens until you get to the Take a look at Maryland credits page
- Under Personal, home and family credits, select Start to the right of Student Loan Debt Relief Credit
- Answer the questions appropriately on the following screens
- If you qualify for the credit, you'll come to the Looks like you need to attach a PDF screen. Select Edit next to your debt relief credit to work on the PDF attachment
- Upload your documentation and select Continue
- Back on the Looks like you need to attach a PDF screen, you should see the your PDF file has been uploaded. Select Continue
With your document uploaded, you should be able to e-file your Maryland return.
