Get your taxes done using TurboTax
You will not enter the Roth IRA in the IRA contribution section since you withdrew it with earnings before the due date it is like you never made the contribution. Another option is to enter the Roth IRA in the IRA contribution section but then enter the excess contribution amount as withdrawn on the penalty screen.
You will need to enter the Form 1099-R for the excess contribution as mentioned in the above instructions. Both Form 1099-Rs (for excess and for the conversion) are entered in the same section of TurboTax. Since you withdrew the excess contribution for 2023 in 2023 your 2023 Form 1099-R should have code 8 and J.
- Click "Federal Taxes" on the top and select "Wages & Income"
- Click "I'll choose what to work on"
- Scroll down and click "Start" next to "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan (1099-R)"
- Answer "Yes" to the question "Did You Have Any of These Types of Income?"
- Click "I'll Type it Myself"
- Choose "Form 1099-R, Withdrawal of Money from 401(k) Retirement Plans, Pensions, IRAs, etc."
- On the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen click "Add Another 1099-R" and enter the Form 1099-R for the returned excess Roth IRA contribution.
