Get your taxes done using TurboTax

If you are treated as self-employed, you need to file a return if you have net earnings of $400 or more. You would need to pay self-employment tax (since you don't have Social Security taxes withheld) with your tax return. That way, you will get credit towards your future retirement as well.

See this TurboTax guide for the self-employed for more information. You may need to upgrade your TurboTax product in order to handle self-employment tax and deductions.

If you are working as a household employee, your employer is required to withhold payroll taxes and issue you a W-2.

See this TurboTax tips article for more information about household employees. If you’re a nanny or other worker who cares for others' children in their home, the IRS would likely consider you a household employee, not an independent contractor.

See here for the California rules for household employees.
