Had the same very frustrating experience!
I then went to do Taxes with Turbo Tax on-line where I would be forced to pay $119 for the premier level, which I don't need, I use deluxe, and that's before filing. Then I went and looked for other options. The Federal Government is trying to reduce costs for filing so I found several options. I just filed with 1040.com for $25 flat. That is to the platform. No fee for Federal or State filing, just need to use you bank account to pay.
The format is pretty straight forward but you can't download from financial institutions. I started doing my own taxes in the 70's, also with Turbo Tax. So if you are familiar with the forms 1099-B,R, SSA, DIV, INT, etc. you don't really need the fancy Turbo Tax step you through everything with pretty screens. I'm very happy with my discovery of 1040.com
