TurboTax and state filing minimums for Virginia
Does TurboTax take into account the filing minimums for state tax returns?
I was a non-resident of the state of Virginia, but I earned income in the state and therefore owe taxes on that income. As a non-resident, I had no withholding in the state.
From what I can tell based on the Virginia department of taxation website only those who made more than $11,950 in the state are required to file (Virginia adjusted gross income). When I put my income and Virginia deductions into TurboTax the agi is less than $11,950 (I think, not sure if there is a place to see this), but TurboTax still indicates that I should file a Virginia tax return and owe a couple hundred in taxes to the state.
Do I need to? Am I missing something else?
Assumptions:
Virginia adjusted gross income = wages earned in Virginia - deductions
