A tax return is required every year, normally due April 15 of the following year. If you request an extension, you can get a 6 month extension to October 15, but that's all. (Although I believe that in 2021, due to the pandemic, the deadlines were extended to May 17 and November 15, and sometimes deadlines are extended for people living in areas hit by disasters who may have difficulty doing the paperwork.)
However, if you are expecting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. And if you are more than 3 years late to file, your refund will never be paid even if you are owed one. If you owe taxes, there is a penalty plus interest for late filing.
