Get your taxes done using TurboTax
If you're receiving a child tax credit on your federal return, you should be receiving the child tax deduction on your North Carolina return.
It's possible that you're receiving this benefit, but aren't recognizing it in TurboTax. Check out both your federal and state tax summaries. To do this in TurboTax Online:
- Open your return in TurboTax
- Select the dropdown to the right of any category on the Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! page, then select Start or Review/Edit
- In the left pane, select the Tax Tools dropdown
- Select Tools
- Select View Tax Summary. Your federal summary should populate. Look at Total credits. Your federal child tax credit of up to $2,000 should be included in the amount
Now, look at your North Carolina summary:
- In the left pane, select NC Tax Summary.
- The child tax deduction doesn't appear separately, but you can tell if it's being included. Subtract the North Carolina Standard or Itemized Deduction from your Federal adjusted gross income. Then subtract Taxable net income. If the difference equals your child tax deduction amount, the deduction has been computed.
You can also verify these amounts using the Forms mode in TurboTax Desktop.
