if you are trying to file 2022 or prior it must be mailed because e-filing is closed for those years.
Turbotax may allow e-filing of 2023 returns on 1/4/24 but several things.
1) you won't be able to e-file unless all the forms in your return are final. The federal can be e-filed before state but not the other way around
2) make sure all 2023 tax reporting forms are included. You would be surprised by the number of OPs that either have to submit a corrected return or amend because they forgot a w-2 or 1099. These don't have to be out until the end of January. Doing a return from paystubs or the like is just asking for problems if the actual tax form differs.
3) even if you e-file on 1/4/24, it will sit on Turbotax servers until e-filing officially opens for 2023 which is now scheduled for 1/23/24. so no rush to e-file.
