Its wonderful that you can help your grandchildren with their higher education.
To possibly claim a tax credit for education expenses, you would have to claim your grandchildren as dependents on your tax return.
Personal expenses (which this would be considered) do not qualify as a charitable contribution regardless of where the funds are from.
