I confirmed this works as well - but instead of a backup, I reinstalled the app from a version I downloaded July 15. It started fine when I disconnected my Mac from the internet (after bypassing a warning about not updating). I wish they wouldn't force an update upfront each time. This confirms to me that the issue is a Turbotax update and not a patch from Apple that caused it to fail. Fortunately I don't need to efile, which as another user pointed out, is not possible without updating and thus reintroducing the bug. I will go back to my original ticket and let them know this information in case it helps them narrow it down.
