That is a great question. The answer depends on several factors which are covered by the IRS in this link:

Generally 3 years from the date you filed your original return applies to most, however if you filed a claim for a loss, or did not report income, or have employees, or meet the conditions outlined in the IRS link above, the records should be kept longer.
You should also refer to your state requirements as their requirements may be different. What state do you live in? I hope this helps answer your question.
