Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Take a look at your Illinois tax return to be sure that you have a state tax liability. If you do not owe any taxes to the state, then you cannot receive an Illinois Property Tax Credit because the credit is non-refundable.
If the income tax amount shown on line 14 of Form IL-1040 is zero, then you will not be eligible to claim the property tax credit because you do not have a state tax liability.
If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, click the Forms button on the upper right corner of the screen. Then select the Illinois Form IL-1040 on the left side of the screen so you can look at line 14.
If you are using TurboTax Online, while you are in the Illinois return click Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Then click Tools, then View Tax Summary. This will show you a summary of your Illinois return. If the Illinois income tax line shows a zero, then you will not be eligible for the property tax credit.
