Get your taxes done using TurboTax
The error message you posted says that the IRS rejected your return because your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and name control do not match IRS records.
Your TIN is the nine digit number assigned to you by the IRS when you applied for a Tax ID number for your business. It is the same thing as an EIN. You can check your SS-4 acceptance letter to make sure the name and number match the IRS records.
The name control is usually the first four letters of the business's name. For example the name control for Jack's Automotive would be JACK.
This problem may have occurred because your business name was entered in the IRS records differently. If your business name contains a surname, the IRS may list the first four letters of the surname as the name control. For example the name control for Jack Smith's Automotive would be SMIT.
If your business name starts with an article, the name control may have started with the second word. For example the name control for The Family Restaurant would be FAMI.
You can check the name control that was picked up by TurboTax by clicking on the Forms icon in the upper right corner. Highlight Information Wks in the list on the left. You will see your EIN and name control on the first line. You can change the name control here if you need to.
You will notice that the message says this error is common the first time an S-Corporation e-files a return. If you can't resolve the problem, you will need to print, sign and mail in your tax return.
To change your return to file by mail:
- Open your return and select the File tab.
- Click Continue.
- Select File by mail.
- Follow the on screen directions to print and mail in your tax return.
