Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Filing separately is hardly ever a viable option for filing taxes. Please read this Turbo Tax article about whether to file separately or jointly.

As far as income levels, there is no income level that I am aware of that can be used as criteria for determining rather to file separately or not. Meanwhile, a huge disadvantage that may occur is the limitation on your deductions you can take. For an example if you itemize, your spouse must itemize also. Also if your spouse claims the standard deduction, you must take one also.

if you itemize, your spouse may not claim the same itemized expenses as you claim on your return meaning that your tax return will be more favorable than your spouse.

My advice is to file jointly unless there are special extenuating circumstances that may prompt you to file separately. The addition of Social Security income is not a reason to file separately.
