My now husband and I were married last year and also purchased a home last year (we were previously renting). Do either or both of these things mean we have to file taxes together (can we keep filing totally separate or do we need to do married filing separately)? We keep our finances separate and would love to do the same with our taxes but it’s not necessary. If it makes a difference, I paid the down payment and pay the mortgage (I pay for home stuff and he pays for most other stuff); unsure how much of a difference that makes. Thanks for any advice!
