Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Hello msil,
Thank you for your question. I am happy to assist you.
If you moved from one state to another within the year, you will have three (3) tax returns to file the following year. You will still need to file your federal return, and in addition, you would need to file a tax return in the state you moved from as well as the state you have moved to. However, if you move to a state that does not require you to file state taxes, then you are required to file just the federal return and the state return for the state that you moved from.
You will file a part-year resident tax return in each state for the year that you move. You most likely will not have to pay double for the state taxes since each state taxes the income that was earned in that state only. However, in case both states tax your income, then you would have to allocate your income between the two states.

Thank you!
