HSA form 8889 splitting the deduction between spouses
Re-using a subject by another contributor (same topic, different situation).
Taxpayer (8889-T) and Spouse (8889-S) both over 55 years old at the beginning of 2022.
8889-T (Taxpayer)
- Both using High Deductible Health Plan for all of 2022. (Line 1)
- Taxpayer HSA contributions all in W2 Box 12 W so Zero entered in Line 2
- My financial advisor said we qualify for the $7,300 Family Contribution (Line 3). Family checked for all months.
- Not clear what Archer MSA is so I assume does not apply, left amount as Zero (Line 4)
- Line 5 remains $7,300 per the calculation.
- Line 6 C - This is the portion of the amount allocated to spouse.
- Why did Turbotax populate $1,046? Seems like a random number.
- Does this determine the amount that spouses' medical receipts can apply to or is this meaningless, since it is a family classification? I assumed if classified as Family, future medical receipts for either taxpayer or spouse can be used. I am inclined to set this to Zero. Need advice on this.
- Line 7. This is where I enter the additional $1,000 for the taxpayer being older than 55 years old.
- Line 8 is a calculation.
- Line 9 came from Taxpayers W2 Box 12W
8889-S (Spouse)
Opened a Lively HSA account and contributed $1000.00 under spouse. No HSA contribution on spouses W2 Box 12.
- Line 1 - Family
- Line 2 - Is this where I enter the $1000 contribution to the Lively HSA account?
- Line 3 - all months checked, Maximum allowable shows $7,300
- Line 4 - 0
- Line 5 - $7300 (calculation)
- Line 6 - Assuming Line 6 in 8889-T is $7300, this is zero, right?
- Line 7 - Maybe this is where I enter the $1000 contribution to the Lively HSA account instead of Line 2. ??
- Line 8 Calculation
- Line 9 is Zero from Spouse W2 Box 12W.
Do folks agree with what I was told from my advisor that our total maximum allowable contribution is $7,300+1000 Taxpayer (Over 55) + $1000 Spouse (Over 55)?
