if you have no dependents and you spoused died in 2022, you file joint in 2022
if you have no dependents and you spoused died in 2021, you file single in 2022
if you have dependents (and there are other rules, but let's keep it simple),
and your spouse died in 2022, you file married joint in 2022
and your spouse died in 2021, you file quailified surviving spouse in 2022
and your spouse died in 2020, you file qualified surviving spouse in 2022
and your spouse died in 2019, you file HOH in 2022
