Greetings to our new and returning community members!

We’re excited to share another sweepstakes and a chance to win a $100 gift card with you. This month, we’re spotlighting Dependents and the Child Tax Credit.

Did you know claiming a dependent may save you money and even increase your refund come tax time? You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiancé and others as long as they meet certain requirements. Depending on your household situation, this could greatly impact your taxes. This is where we’d like to hear from you. Did you recently learn you were able to claim someone who isn’t your child? Did you just have a baby and this year will be the first time you can claim a dependent? Or maybe you’ve claimed the credit for years but this year, your dependents have flown the nest and you will no longer qualify for the dependent and child tax credits. Are you planning for how this will affect your taxes? Please tell us below! We want to hear from our community about how having dependents impacts you. If you share, you could win a $100 gift card!

Reply to this post with how having (or not having) dependents impacts you and your taxes. On October 26, 2022, a winner will be randomly selected from this thread.

First and foremost my dependent is my son Jayce! He is 11 years old and the sun to my sky! He is smart, sweet, mature, and super funny! The last couple years have been tough on us with moving around and trying to maintain a steady living situation since Covid hit a lot of us hard. The dependent tax credit always comes in handy to help us get more established at the beginning of the year and we’ve since been building everything back to where we were! We don’t have a lot but we have what we need! And that’s more than I could ask for!
Thanks-
Kathryn White

Level 2

We have used this credit and have saved taxes every year.  This year, our youngest is ready to file their own taxes and we are happy with that option too since their refund will be more than what tax benefit we get on our returns by claiming them dependent.

I never filed my son,(me being only 20 years old)and sadly couldn’t file him this year because my family member claiming him forgot to put the second part of his last name (for example) Sanders-Cadena.

I’ve never received taxes this year is my first year filing hopefully everything goes well he’ll be 2 years old (2022)and I’ll continue to learn more about finances

This will be my first year being able to claim a dependent so I am not really sure how this will impact me. I am looking forward to finding out. Being a single mother, I could use all the money I can get.

Level 1

I’m a single mom to a one year old and with living expenses being so high I’m doing everything I can to provide for me and my son. The child dependent tax credit would help me provide child care for my son so I can work longer hours.
