How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868)?

SOLVEDby TurboTax5331Updated February 08, 2023

An extension gives you until October 16, 2023 to file your taxes instead of the tax deadline (April 18, 2023). Filing an extension does not give you more time to pay your taxes (if you owe), which are due on April 18. However, it will help you avoid a late-filing penalty.

You must file for an extension by the tax deadline.

You can file your extension at our Easy Extension website or you can select your product below for detailed steps.

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax Online
  2. Under Manage Your Return on the bottom, left side of the screen, select File an extension
    • If you don't see the File an extension button, search for extend and select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. Follow the instructions to e-file your extension
  1. Sign in and open or continue your return
  2. Search for extend and select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. Follow the instructions to e-file your extension
  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Continue to your return
  3. Type extend into the search bar and select the Jump to link at the top of your results
  4. Answer Yes on the Applying for an Extension screen and continue
  5. Follow the instructions to prepare, print, and mail your 4868 form

If you don't want to e-file your extension, you can file it by mail.

Download and print Form 4868, fill it out, and get it postmarked before midnight, April 18. Payment and mailing instructions are on pages 3 and 4 of your printout.
