Tax year 2025 calendar: Important federal dates and deadlines

January 6, 2026
The Intuit Electronic Filing Center begins accepting and holding/processing 2025 tax returns that are final and able to be e-filed.
January 15, 2026
Due date for fourth installment of 2025 estimated tax payments
January 27, 2026
The IRS starts processing returns
March 17, 2026
Deadline for filing a calendar-year S corporation or Partnership return or extension
April 15, 2026
Deadline for filing a 2025 personal return or extension
The return or extension must be postmarked or transmitted for e-filing by April 15, 2026.
If you owe: To avoid late payment penalties and interest, any taxes you owe must be paid by this date, even if you filed an extension.
If you're expecting a refund: If you missed the filing deadline, you have three years from the April 15, 2026 due date to file and still receive your refund. After that date, unclaimed 2025 refunds become the property of the Department of the Treasury.

Deadline to claim a 2021 tax year refund
June 16, 2026
Deadline for filing a 2025 personal return for US citizens or residents living and working abroad, including military duty
Due date for second installment of 2026 estimated tax payments
September 15, 2026
Final deadline to file your 2025 calendar-year S corporation or partnership tax return if you filed an extension
Due date for third installment of 2026 estimated tax payments
October 15, 2026
Final deadline to file your 2025 personal tax return if you filed an extension
Final deadline to file your 2025 calendar-year estate/trust tax return if you filed an extension
Final deadline to file your 2025 calendar-year C corporation tax return if you filed an extension
October 20, 2026
Final deadline to resubmit a rejected return that was originally e-filed on or before October 15, 2026
If you filed an extension and you're expecting a refund but missed the October 20 final cutoff date, you have until October 16, 2028 to file a paper return and claim your 2025 refund. After that date, any refund would be forfeited to the Department of the Treasury.
