Can I file a 2024 return if I haven't filed my 2023 return yet?
by TurboTax•1266• Updated 1 week ago
There's no law or rule that says you have to file your 2023 return before you can do your 2024 return, but it's best to prepare your 2023 return first if possible.
This gives you several advantages:
- You can transfer your 2023 data to your 2024 return, which saves time and prevents data-entry errors.
- You'll have the answers to questions that involve last year's return, and you'll avoid having to amend your return if you answer them wrong.
- You can use the adjusted gross income (AGI) method to electronically sign your 2024 return so you can e-file it.
If you can't file your 2023 return before filing your 2024 taxes, that's OK. Just be sure to review your 2024 return after you file your 2023 return. If your 2024 return needs corrections based on info in your 2023 return, you may need to amend.
