Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit, Tax Year 2023

Some Michigan TurboTax customers have overpaid their state taxes due to an error with the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit. 

We recommend that affected people submit an amended state return as soon as possible. By filing an amended return, you’ll be able to get the money back in your pocket where it belongs!

To amend your state tax return, select your version of TurboTax below and follow the instructions.

  1. Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Michigan income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return, or your banking records to verify the correct amount.
  2. Log in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2023 return. In Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2023. If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2023 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF).
  3. Select Amend (change) return and then select Amend Using TurboTax Online.
  4. On the OK, let’s get a kickstart on your 2023 amended return screen, choose TurboTax sent me an email, then Continue.
  5. On the What did we contact you about? screen, choose Something else then Continue.
  6. On the Tell us which 2023 return(s) you want to amend screen, select 2023 Michigan return. Then Continue. Your state refund/balance due tracker will usually reset to $0. This is normal.
  7. On the Let’s get your state taxes done right screen, select Continue.
  8. On the Let’s work your state taxes screen, select Amend next to Michigan.
  9. On the Let’s Amend Your Michigan Return screen, select Yes, let’s amend and get it done (Recommended), then Continue.
  10. On the Confirm or Enter Previous Refund or Tax Paid screen, compare the refund/payment made information with the amount you wrote down in step 1. Make any corrections needed, then Continue.
  11. On the Confirm or Enter adjusted gross income from the original Michigan return screen, confirm the amount shown for the adjusted gross income reported on Line 10 of the original MI-1040, then select Continue.
  12. On the Reason for Amending Original Return screen, select Other (provide detailed explanation of changes on next screen). Then Continue.
  13. On the Copy Federal Amended Explanation? screen, select No.
  14. On the Tell Us Why You’re Amending screen, enter “TO CLAIM EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT”. Then Done.
  15. On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select Yes, I’ve entered everything and let’s review, then Continue.
  16. On the Smart Check Results screen, select Continue. 
  17. On the Lets work on your state taxes screen, select Continue.
  18. On the Let’s get your return ready to file screen, select Check my return.
  19. On the This years’ tax recap screen, select skip recap.
  20. On the  Time to put it all together for one last look Screen, select Continue.
  21. On We just need your OK on a couple of things screen, click review and sign and fill out the pop up.
  22. On the Great job so far! screen, select Continue.
  23. On the Just one more step and we’ll file your return screen, select Continue by Step 3 then continue through the screens to download, print and save your Michigan amended return.
  24. On the We’ve determined the fastest way to get your refund, select e-file for Michigan and  change the Federal return and the non Michigan State returns to file by mail
    • Note. You are only changing your MI state tax return. Please do not refile your Federal or other State returns.
    • NOTE. Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
  1. Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Michigan state income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records to verify the correct amount.
  2. Launch TurboTax and open your 2023 return.
  3. Before you make any changes, select File and Save As... then add Amended 2023 return to the file name to preserve your original return.
  4. Select Online and Check for Updates. Allow the program to update if any are available.
  5. Select the Federal Taxes tab, (Personal tab if you’re using Home & Business), and then select Other Tax Situations. You may be asked to answer a few preliminary questions before you see a list of categories. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms select Start next to Amend a Return.
  6. On the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen, select Continue.
  7. On the Did you already file your return? screen, select Yes, I’ve already filed my return. Then select I was contacted by TurboTax and told I may need to amend for some other reason. Then select Continue. 
    • Note. The refund meters will reset to -0-. This is normal.
  8. On the What do you need to change on your return? screen, scroll down to the bottom and select Update next to State Return.
  9. On the Let’s work on your state return screen, select Continue.
  10. On the Let’s Take Care of Your State Taxes screen, select Continue.
  11. On the Your State Returns screen, select Edit next to Michigan.
  12. On the Let’s Amend Your Michigan Return screen, select Yes, let’s amend and get it done (Recommended). Then select continue.
  13. On the Confirm or Enter Previous Refund or Tax Paid screen, confirm the amount is the same as the amount from step 1. Correct if needed.
  14. On the Confirm or Enter adjusted gross income from the original Michigan return screen, confirm the amount shown for the adjusted gross income reported on Line 10 of the original MI-1040, then select Continue.
  15. On the Reason for Amending Original Return screen, select Other (provide detailed explanation of changes on next screen). Then select Continue.
  16. On the Copy Federal Amended Explanation screen, select No, as you are not amending your Federal return.
  17. On the Tell Us Why You’re Amending screen, enter “TO CLAIM EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT”. Then select Done.
  18. On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select Yes, I’ve entered everything and let’s review. Then Continue.
  19. On the Check This Entry screen, make any corrections and then select Continue.
  20. On the Review Your Return screen, select Continue.
  21. On the Run State Review Again screen, select Done With Review.
  22. On the You’re Done with 2023 Michigan screen, select Done With States.
  23. On the Let’s make sure your taxes are correct screen, select Continue.
  24. On the Let’s Check These Entries screen, select Check Entries. 
    • NOTE: No changes are being made to the Federal return, so please skip these questions.
  25. On the Run Smart Check Again screen select Done.
  26. On the Amend Return Summary screen, select Continue.
  27. On the You’re Done! Print and Mail Your Returns screen, follow the instructions to print and save your amended Michigan return. Then Select Done. Then select Click the FILE tab above to e-file your return
  28. On the Let’s get ready to file your taxes Screen, select Continue.
  29. On the We Recommend E-filing Your Federal Return, Select File by Mail, then select Continue.
  30. Follow the instructions to e-file your amended Michigan return.
    • NOTE. Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
