Error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation or updating may occurs in TurboTax for Windows.
If you're using TurboTax 2013 on a computer with an older processor (Pentium 3 or earlier, or AMD equivalent) click here to get the fix.
This error can occur when the Microsoft .NET Framework Installer cannot install and/or update your system. Possible causes include:
- Damaged Windows file and folder permissions
- Damaged Windows Registry key permissions
- Damaged Microsoft .NET Framework installation
This error can also occur when installing TurboTax 2013 on systems with older processors.
Solution for 2012 and earlier TurboTax versions
If error 1603 occurs while updating TurboTax, your best bet is to download and install a manual update.

Note: We also suggest using Windows Update to ensure that your operating system is up to date, as this can resolve a 1603 error.
I am hoping something similar will be offered for those of us who prefer the CD version.
In a way I am lucky. Some of the places that send me tax information are slow so I have to wait. Hopefully TT will win the race in getting me started on my taxes and the refund that will pay for a new computer.

They have identified the problem and developed a fix. The fix is being tested and planned to be released 1/24/14. I learned this because they emailed me, because I signed up with them to let them know I have this problem. Sign up, and they will notify you when the fix is ready and how to download it.
