I am trying to complete the sales tax portion. It is asking me where I actually lived, not my legal residence. Since I am active duty military, I was stationed in Japan

Tax help for military filers
If you are trying to determine your state sales tax rate for the sales tax deduction, since you are on active military duty, you will use the sales tax rate of your home state of record because to the IRS, that is where you are considered to live for income tax purposes (even though you spend the entire year in Japan). So just use the sales tax rate of the town in your home state where either you own a home or where you enlisted.
