I am doing the taxes for my mother-in-law who passed away 12/09/16. she only has SS and a little interest on savings. She does have a home paid for. Recommendations?

Retirement tax questions

You may not need to file a return for her. 

If her total income is less than 11,900 dollars, she does not have to file a tax return. Her social security income is not included in income unless the bank interest plus 1/2 of her social security income are greater than 25,000 dollars.
