1099Q and tuition paid in 2016

Received a 1099Q for disbursement of 529 funds in 2016.  Used these funds to pay for tuition and education expenses for 2 dependents.  How do I claim the expenses against the income?

After entering the 1099-Q, you enter the college expenses separately. TurboTax (TT) will match them up. In TurboTax (TT), enter at:

Federal Taxes Tab

Deductions & Credits

-Scroll down to:

--Education

  --Education Expenses

Alternatively; you can just not report the 1099-Q, at all, if your student-beneficiary has sufficient educational expenses, including room & board (even if he lives at home) to cover the distribution. You would still have to do the math to see if there were enough expenses left over for you to claim the tuition credit. You cannot double dip.
