My wife is in a Student Loan Forgiveness program and she already filed her taxes. Can I still file and get any benefits? Will it affect her loan program?

Right now her student loan payment is based on her income, which is not very much so she pays very little each month.  We were told that if we filed jointly, then the loan program may start to factor in both of our combined incomes to determine the monthly payment, which would increase almost $800 a month if that were to happen.

Is it possible for us to file as a married couple to get the marriage tax breaks without it affecting the student loan payment?  If yes, what if she already filed her taxes back in January? Is it too late to take advantage?

After you file

How a change in Income affects the status of her Loan Forgiveness is up to the Guarantor of the Loan. She would have to contact them directly to inquire on this change.

If you were married on or before December 31, 2016, the filing status on your Tax Return must be Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate.

If you wish to elect the Status of Married Filing Joint your wife must amend her Tax Return in order to do this. If you attempt to file Married-Joint the IRS will reject the return because only one Tax Return per SSN is allowed.
