Name Change W-2
I recently changed my legal name and gender, so I have a court order, my driver's license has been changed and I'm planning on changing my information at the bank as soon as possible. However my W-2's from 2016 have my old legal name on them, and I don't want my tax return check to be in my old name and have trouble at the bank. Should I wait to change my bank account information until after I receive my check? Or would Turbo Tax be able to file my taxes with my new name?

If the Social Security office has been notified of the name and gender change, then you can change the information in the Personal Info section of TurboTax.
To edit your name, follow the steps below.
- Choose the Personal Info tab.
- On the Personal Info Summary screen, click the Edit button by your name.
- Edit your name and click Continue
As for the banking information, you will want to make sure that it matches the name on the deposit being issued because the bank may reject a deposit if the name on the deposit does not match the name of the account holder.

Thanks so much! Does it matter that my W-2's are in my old name?

The IRS matches the information with the information that the Social Security Administration has on file, so as long as the information is correct with the Social Security office then the name on the W-2 will not be an issue.
