I am currently receiving long term disability payments from my employer. They are not taking out any federal taxes. How should I handle this? Will I need to pay these when I file my federal return?

Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Your long term disability payments might not be taxable, and may not have to be included in your return. If you paid the entire cost of a sickness or injury  insurance plan with after-tax money, you do not need to report any payments you receive under the plan as income. If your employer paid for the insurance, then you would have to report the income.

If you do have to report it,

  • Go to the top of your screen and choose My Account.
  • Choose Tools.
  • Choose Topic Search, then type in your topic (disability pay, not on W-2) and click Go.
