Why am I receiving a child tax credit if the other parent is claiming them?

In order to solve this, you can indicate that the child is not your dependent. Then, you will not receive the Child Tax Credit and can proceed with your return.

You can either delete the dependent from your return or adjust the information about them. Here's how to do this in TurboTax Online:

  1. Navigate to My Info, Your household, select the dependent.
  2. Choose "My child", continue and be sure their name, date of birth and proper citizenship is complete.
  3. Continue to the screen called "additional info." Here, under where they ask who is the child's parent, you can indicate that you have a written or verbal agreement with the other parent and that they will claim your child.
