The IRS normally will start accepting tax returns for the 2024 tax year in late January 2025.

Usually the tax return can be e-filed by mid-January of 2025.  However, the e-filed return will be just sitting on the TurboTax server until the IRS actually starts accepting tax returns.

Tax returns are filed after the end of the year that the tax return is for. Filing of 2025 tax returns will begin in January 2026. Filing of 2024 tax returns will begin in January 2025. The IRS has not yet announced a specific date.
