Self-employment income or Farm income

We have a small ranch with 5-6 cows that we lease a bull to breed and raise the calves for beef.  We started this project in Dec. 2020 and won't have beef to market until 2025.  Do we need to list this as a self-employed business or can we just keep it as Farm Income and Farm Rental?  Also, if we have to list this as self-employed, do we need to get an EIN?

Keep it as a farm on schedule F for as long as you are running the business.  Once you have beef to market you'll have more income to report and that kind of thing takes time and the system understands that.  Continuing as a farm on schedule F you are not required to get an EIN but you may want to do it at some point if the thing starts to grow.
