My mother left money in a trust account for a son who is not employed. How do I take care of the l099-INT I received? What do I do now?

I am the trustee and not sure how to file and pay taxes on interest income for her son. I have been distributing it monthly to him for one year, and now I received a 1099-INT for the trust.

If the interest is reported under the federal ID number of the trust, you don't need to report it if the amount is under $600 for the year. Otherwise, you will need to complete a trust tax return Form 1041 to account for the interest income. You can do that by using the TurboTax Business product.

If the Form 1099-INT is in the social security number of the son, he would have to enter it on his tax return if he was required to file one. You can use this IRS tool to see if he is required to file a tax return.
