If I choose to not to pay what I owe for federal with my state refund, Can I now go back and change how I'd like to pay the federal so I can file today?

You misunderstood.

Your federal tax due cannot be paid from your state refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not.  If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.  You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

Could I undue the e-file and then file for an extension instead?

Un-do an e-file?  Did you already e-file?  If you e-filed it is too late--you cannot stop an e-file.

So--you e-filed.   When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here?

Both state and federal are accepted, but also said I had to mail a check and docs by yesterday. I'll mail it today and see what happens. Thanks
