How many years back can i file taxes

For a refund you can only to back to 2012. If you owe there are no limitations.

TurboTax Online only supports the upcoming tax year 2015 and the prior 3 years (2014, 2013, and 2012).   The latter 3 have to be prepared in desktop software (CD/download).  Each tax year requires a different year software; i.e., 2014 can only prepare 2014 return; 2013 software can only prepare 2013 return, etc.  Prior-year returns cannot be efiled; they must be printed and mailed.

NOTE:  If you prepare returns for multiple years, do NOT mail them in the same envelope.  Mail them separately.

You can see prices for those 3 prior years at the link below if ordered directly from TurboTax, but you may also be able to find them at a discount at reputable retailers like Amazon:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products.jsp

See this FAQ on options for filing returns earlier than 2012:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2559426-can-i-use-turbotax-to-file-a-2011-2010-2009-or-earlier-tax...

If you locate a company to file the older returns, be sure it is a reputable company.

You can download the older-years forms and instructions for free at the IRS website:
https://www.irs.gov/Forms-&-Pubs

If you find 2011 and earlier TurboTax software, be aware that you won't be able to update it to the final version and final forms, and you won't be able to download the state program into it.

Also note that if you are due a Federal refund, it is generally too late to get a refund for 2011 and earlier years.  There is no penalty for filing a late return that was due a refund.
