How can I figure out why I owe the state so much?
You only get a refund if you paid more in taxes throughout the year than you were legally responsible for. If you paid the right amount, you'd get no refund, and if you paid too little, you would owe.
On W-2 Form Line 17 you can see your Federal withheld for the year.
On your state tax table, you can see how much taxes you have to pay on your income.
You can find tax tables on your state Department of Revenue website https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3302452
Follow the link to preview TurboTax Online. https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3302322
Hope its help.
