I already submitted my taxes for 2024, but I received a 1099-G form in the mail this week. Box 2 shows money for what I believe is a state refund. I had no idea I would even receive a 1099-G, so it caught me off guard. I'm unsure if I need to file this 1099-G and include it in my taxes, especially since I don’t know if my taxes for last year were itemized, and I don’t have access to my copy. Will including this 1099-G affect my refund amount or cause any penalties? I also qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), but my refund won’t be processed until after the 15th of this month due to that. Should I be concerned about owing anything, or is there something I need to do regarding the 1099-G or EITC?
Edit: I also checked the IRS website, and they said it should be filed in state level but see online that people have filed it in the federal, and I'm also unsure which to follow.

I recommend you don't do anything. Chances are you did not itemize your deductions last year, which means that the refund is not taxable and does not need to be reported. If it taxable, the IRS will propose an adjustment to your return to include that amount. If that were to occur, you would receive a letter notifying you of the proposed change. You won't have to do anything. They will adjust any refund, or amount owed accordingly. So, I would just wait and see. But if you do file an amended return, wait until you have received your refund before doing so.
