I have been taking care of my adult Special Needs Nephew since the passing of my sister in 2020 and I was told to add him on my taxes as a dependent. I placed him on my taxes last year and it was ADJUSTED by the IRS lower than what I was expecting AFTER my approval from Turbo Tax. Why was it adjusted.

Great Question @Lissamb!
It depends on the situation. Some Special Needs Adults work and either care for themselves or live in Halfway Homes. Could you provide more information on your Nephew? And your relationship with him? Does he live with you? Does he, a Trust setup for him or the combination of the 2, provide more than 50% of his expenses?

My nephew is 27 years old, he does not work, he was diagnosed that he is incapable of working, he lives with me, I am his Aunt, his mother was my sister, I provide all of his expenses, no trust etc.,
Hi @Lissamb , did you get any kind of notice stating why your refund was adjusted? This would be helpful when determining exactly what the issue was. If you did not, you may consider getting in contact with the IRS and seeing why it was adjusted.
All the Best

@Lissamb!
I've worked with parents of disabled adults. Usually you would want to provide proof, such as a letter from a doctor, that your nephew is permanently disabled and not capable of working. If this is the case, often there is a Disability payment from Social Security. There are additional worksheets to go through reporting how much their disability payments covers and how much you cover to provide proof that you are providing more than 50% of his expenses.

Call the IRS they have made many mistakes to a lot of people returns including mine. My return was adjusted due to IRS personnel not looking at the additional worksheet. They have a long hold time and sometimes you are not able to get through. I suggest calling 7am EST or around 2pm EST. I have received majority of what they owe me just waiting on my last check now.
