The year your child was born, you got the full child tax credit, for the year, even though she was only with you 5 days.  It works the same way in 2024, when she turns 17. It's all or nothing. It was all in 2007 and nothing in 2024. Everybody gets the child tax credit for 17 years, regardless of birth date.

I think you mean the child tax credit.   You lose the child tax credit when the child turns 17.  After they are 17 you get the $500 credit for other dependents instead of the $2000 child tax credit.    She is still your dependent---but the credit is lower.

To qualify for the Child Tax credit, your child should be under age 17 by 12/31/2024.

The $500 Credit for Other Dependents allows taxpayers a credit for certain dependents that don't qualify for the Child Tax Credit, such as qualifying children age 17 or older, adult dependents, and dependents who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

To be eligible for this credit, the person(s) being claimed must fit the definition of a qualifying child or a qualifying relative, as defined here:

What is the $500 Credit for Other Dependents (“Family Tax Credit”)?

The child and dependent care credit is a tax credit that may help you pay for the care of eligible children and other dependents (qualifying persons).
