Are you a (W-2) employee, or self-employed?

There are two ways to deduct home office expenses.  Once is using Actual Expenses and the other is the Simplified method.  Which one you use depends on the amount of your expenses and the size of your office space.

The Actual Expense method uses the business use percentage of your actual costs (utilities, mortgage interest/rent, insurance, etc.) based on the square footage of your home office compared to your total home. The Simplified method is $5/sq ft up to 300 sq ft of office space.

Here are the steps to enter your home office and other unreimbursed employee business expenses into TurboTax:

  • Federal Taxes tab (Personal tab in the Home & Business version)
  • Deductions and Credits
  • I'll Choose What I Work On
  • Employment Expenses
  • then, Job-Related Expenses

As an employee receiving a W-2, your home office expenses and other Unreimbursed Employee Business expenses would go on Form 2106. These would then flow to the Schedule A Itemized Deductions where it is subject to the 2%-of-adjusted-gross-income limit.   If you have enough expenses, and typically itemize your deductions, it may benefit you.
