If my itemized deductions are more than the standard deduction but the resulting refund is the same, is there a benefit to either using itemized deductions vs standard?

If your bottom line tax refund is the same whether you use itemized deductions or the standard deduction, then it is probably more beneficial to use the standard deduction.  That will simplify your tax return and also prevent any state refund you receive from being taxable on your return next year.

However, if you are in a rare situation where you are claiming charitable contributions that exceed your Adjusted Gross Income limit, then you would need to itemize to show that charitable contribution and be able to carryover the excess.
