No, you would have to have at least $2,500 in earned income to receive a child tax credit. It may be available for earned income over that amount even if you had no federal income tax liability.

That was probably just for 2021.  You would have to file a 2021 tax return.

The child tax credit rules for 2021 tax returns were unique to tax year 2021; you could receive the CTC even if you did not have any income earned from working.

That will not be the case for tax year 2022 and going forward.  The rules revert back to the requirement to have income earned from working in order to receive the refundable part of the CTC.   If you do not have at least $2500 of income from working you will not get the CTC or the additional child tax credit.  And the age cutoff went back to under 17 (not 18).

@Vick89tiff  There was one tax year----2021--- for which you could get the child tax credit even if you did not work.   For 2022 and the years after that, the laws changed back to the old law and you cannot get any child-related refundable credits if you did not earn money from working.    The absolute minimum you could earn and even get a few dollars back for child tax credit is $2500, and you must earn considerably more than $2500 in order to get the full refundable amount of $1700 per child.

If you did not work or have taxable income, is there someone else who can claim you or the child as dependents?
