When to file quarterly
Is it too late in the year to file quarterly? How do I go about it? For example, could I start making payments in August or does it have to be 4 times per year?

When to file quarterly
There are 4 payment deadlines for estimated taxes. Even though you might have missed the first two this year, there is no reason you can't take advantage of making the remainder of the estimated payments for 2023.
The payments are referred to as being "quarterly" but as you see below, they aren't actually split up to be made every 3 months.
Payment Period | Due Date |
---|---|
January 1 – March 31 | April 15 |
April 1 – May 31 | June 15 |
June 1 – August 31 | September 15 |
September 1 – December 31 | January 15 of the following year. |
Make sure to keep good records of your payments - track both the amount you paid, as well as the date it was actually made. When you file your return with TurboTax, there is an option to enter your estimated payments and if you made more than one payment in a quarter, you will be able to record those details as well.
The easiest way to make your federal estimated payments is to use the IRS website and pay at irs.gov/payments. When you pay with the IRS directly, they give you several drop down menus, and one of those allows you to indicate that you are making an estimated tax payment and what year you are making that payment for!
