Can I claim my parent as a dependent in 2022?

SOLVEDby TurboTax4709Updated January 13, 2023

Whether it's a parent, friend, or relative you support, being able to claim someone as a dependent can save you money. If you're not sure you can claim your parent or another person as a dependent, we'll help you figure that out.

Generally, you can claim your parent if they didn't have more than $4,400 in gross income (excluding nontaxable Social Security) and you provided more than half of their support in 2022. Your parent doesn't have to live with you. There are a few other specifics we'll ask you about as we go along.
